I was impressed by the story told last night. I met my husband in Smethwick in the 60s – the most racist time as shown in this 3 min video I made for the launch of Sculpting the Elephant. We lived for a while in Handsworth in Putney Road opposite Bill Morris who went on to be a union leader. He had just become a shop steward but complained to Atam about the racism in the unions. Atam said the only way to change the situation was for him to get on the executive and he did. Handsworth was a fading beauty of such potential –completely let down by all political parties who invested nothing in it. I detail the most racist election in British history in my memoir to be published in October.
