The young people of every colour demonstrating at Black Lives Matter protests made me realise how relevant were our workshops for the Shakespeare in Oxford project.
The context – Romeo and Juliet re- imagined in East Oxford . Polly Biswas Gladwin had written a script called Joe and Zara which the youngsters read . They played out scenes and discussed it as a means of script development and getting them to think for themselves.
It was tough getting to a diverse group of young people to take part in the workshops. (The film producer Victor Glynn was involved so you would have thought it would have been easy!) The young people- of every skin colour -who are taking to the streets in the past week want a world where what they look like and where their parents come from doesn’t determine their future.
We must empower them and let them change the world for the better. below – the programme and a pic taken by the Oxford Times when we launched it .
